The Norse Revival of Minnesota
What would Norse culture look like today, had its traditions never been interrupted?
Norse culture is not a relic to be studied behind glass. It is a living tradition — waiting to be reclaimed.
Uppsala — The Norse Revival of MN is a Minnesota-based organization reviving authentic Norse seasonal traditions as living culture. Not reenactment. Not Viking fandom. The genuine ancestral customs of the Norse world — its seasonal calendar, its feasts, its music, its games, its crafts — brought fully into the present.
The governing question behind everything Uppsala does:
"What would Norse culture look like today, had its traditions never been interrupted?"
The Norse seasonal calendar was not simply forgotten. It was systematically suppressed — its customs dismantled, absorbed and erased across generations. Uppsala exists to reverse that. Minnesota, home to one of the largest Scandinavian populations in the World, is the right place to begin. The ancestral thread runs deep here. And we aim to give that a home, a place to live and thrive.
Uppsala focuses on Norse culture — not the Viking aesthetic or fandom. Events are organized around ancestral seasonal custom, not costumes or historical infatuation.
Every Uppsala event is anchored to the timing of the sun and the moon that year — so every year is different but also a pattern. The culture orients around the turning of seasons.
Each event creates a door for adjacent communities — metal fans, fur traders, athletes, foodies, artisans — to encounter Norse culture through something they already love.
Minnesota carries one of the deepest Scandinavian ancestral roots in America. Uppsala is the revival this place has been quietly waiting for.
Uppsala is built across three distinct branches, each serving a different role in the revival — community connection, private feast, and large-scale public celebration. Together they form the full year.
Free, recurring community events that build community connection and cultivate togetherness and comraderie. No ticket required, no Norse knowledge required — just curiosity and a willingness to show up. Join the mailing list to receive locations and dates the moment they are announced.
Hnefatafl — the king's game — is the board game of the Norse world. Tafl Time is a recurring open play session where newcomers learn and competitors prepare for the Hnefatafl Championship.
Free EntryAn evening of theater rooted in the Norse saga tradition. Live performance, varied formats, and the ancient art of holding a community together through the spoken word.
Free EntryIntimate indoor acoustic performances featuring authentic Nordic and Norse instrumentalists playing nyckelharpa, hardingfele, kravik lyre, and more. A warm, artistic atmosphere rooted in living Nordic musical tradition.
Free EntryFrom its Norse past to its Nordic present, the topic is Scandinavia — culture, foreign relations, mythology, history, language, food, immigration, traditional knowledge, regional variation, etc. — tested in the most convivial format possible. A gateway for curious newcomers and a challenge for the well-read.
Free EntryAn ancestral mobility and breath practice built on runic stances from the Norse tradition — a living full body practice that follows the sequence of the Swedish Rune Poem. The Norse analogue to tai chi. All bodies welcome.
Free EntryHollywood has never done the Norse world properly. We lovingly celebrate this — screening the most entertainingly inaccurate 'Viking' cinematography, with comic commentary, cold drinks and a room full of people who know better.
Free EntryFive limited-seating, seasonal communal banquets, which we call 'feasts', scheduled by the moon and presented as if this norse-nordic-fusion had been passed down from a thousand years ago. A culinary experience found nowhere else in the world.

Four large-format, public events under each respective traditional holiday — a fur market in Duluth, a metal festival in the summer, a fire and ice experience in the city, and tournaments of Norse competitive sport. Building each year better than the last — one new event per season.
Disþing has always been a time of trade and assembly. The Hide & Pelt Market revives the ancestral tradition of raw material commerce — furs, hides, leather, wool, bone, horn, and antler brought together under one roof in the Norse spirit of honest craft and fair trade. A fur auction, artisan market, and Hnefatafl Championship run through the weekend.
The midsummer fire burns loudest through heavy strings and pounding drums. Midsomar Metal Fest brings neo-Norse and metal bands to the height of the Norse summer — built for the forests and lakes of northern Minnesota. Multiple stages, too much food, blacksmiths galore, traditional tattooing, and the long midsummer night.
Jól reminds us of the interaction between fire and ice — and the Jól Fire & Ice Spectacular makes that ancient duality spectacular. From Norse-inspired ice art competitions to a massive fire performance to an outdoor ice bar, skijoring racing and unseen surprises in the heart of a Minnesota winter. This is the single most dramatic night of the calendar — you won't even notice the cold.
The Norse tradition of physical excellence was survival — not sport. The Vitrnatr Norse Sports Championships is a multi-tournament series featuring elite competitors across modern disciplines rooted in ancestral Norse life: blades, timber, targets, strength, casting, and combat, as well as: cart pulling, speed shearing, herding, hunting, and jumping. Six human categories. Five animal categories. One epic championship weekend.
The Uppsala Mailing List is how the revival communicates with its community. Community event locations and dates, feast invitation consideration, early access to Heathen Quarter events, and the ongoing unfolding of the Norse Revival of Minnesota — all of it arrives here first, and only here.
